How to Find the BPM of a Song: Five Reliable Methods

You need a song's tempo to remix it, sample it, mix it into a DJ set, build a workout playlist or simply play along. Sometimes the BPM is printed in the file's metadata; often it is missing or wrong.

This guide covers five methods for finding the BPM yourself, from a ten-second tap test to precise measurement in a DAW, and explains how to spot the mistakes that trip most people up.

Before you start: find the pulse

Every method depends on identifying the beat — the steady pulse you would tap your foot to. In most modern pop, hip-hop, Afrobeats and dance music, these are the easiest places to hear it:

  • The kick drum, especially in house and Amapiano, where it often lands on every beat.
  • The snare or clap, which usually falls on beats two and four in a 4/4 groove.
  • The hi-hat or shaker, which often plays eighth or sixteenth notes — useful for keeping time, but tapping it will double or quadruple your reading.

Method 1: Use a tap tempo tool

Tap tempo is the quickest method and needs nothing but a browser. You tap a button in time with the music; the tool measures the gaps between your taps and converts the average into BPM.

  1. Open the BPM tap calculator and start the song.
  2. Listen for a bar or two to lock into the pulse before you begin.
  3. Tap on every beat for at least 16 beats. Spacebar tapping on a computer is usually steadier than clicking a mouse.
  4. Watch the reading settle. The first few taps swing wildly; after a dozen or so it should hover within a BPM or two.
  5. Round sensibly. Most commercially produced tracks are set to a whole number, so a reading of 101.7 on a programmed track is probably 102.

Tap tempo is accurate enough for DJing, playlist building and most practice purposes. Its weakness is human timing: if you rush or drag, the result drifts. Tapping for longer is the cure.

Method 2: Count beats against a clock

No app? Use a stopwatch. Count the beats you hear in a fixed period and scale up to a minute.

BPM = beats counted in 15 seconds × 4
BPM = beats counted in 30 seconds × 2

Counting for 30 seconds is more accurate than 15, because a single missed or extra beat only shifts the answer by two BPM rather than four. For example, if you count 52 beats in 30 seconds, the tempo is about 104 BPM.

A useful variation is counting bars instead of beats. In 4/4, count how many bars pass in 30 seconds, multiply by four to get beats, then double. Counting bars is easier on fast tracks where individual beats blur together.

Method 3: Line the track up in a DAW

For production work — sampling, remixing, making an edit — you want an exact figure. A digital audio workstation gives you one.

  1. Import the audio and turn off any automatic warping or time-stretching so you see the original waveform.
  2. Place the start of a clear downbeat (often a strong kick) exactly on bar 1 of the grid.
  3. Adjust the project tempo until later downbeats — say bar 9 or bar 17 — also fall exactly on grid lines.
  4. Zoom in and check a downbeat near the end of the song. If it still lines up, you have the tempo.

Many DAWs also include tempo detection that analyses the audio for you. Treat the result as a starting point and confirm it against the grid, because detection can be fooled by syncopated drums or sparse intros.

Use the length of a loop

If you can isolate a section that you know is a whole number of bars — say a clean four-bar loop — you can calculate the tempo precisely from its length:

BPM = (bars × beats per bar × 60) ÷ loop length in seconds

A four-bar 4/4 loop lasting exactly 9.6 seconds gives (4 × 4 × 60) ÷ 9.6 = 100 BPM.

Method 4: Let DJ software analyse it

DJ applications analyse tracks when you import them and store a BPM and beat grid. They are usually reliable on electronic music with a steady kick. They struggle more with:

  • live recordings whose tempo drifts,
  • songs with long beatless intros,
  • swung or heavily syncopated grooves, and
  • tracks that sit on the boundary between two ranges, which may be read at half or double speed.

Most apps let you set a preferred BPM range so that, for instance, a 70 BPM reading is shown as 140 for a drill set. Always spot-check the grid on a few beats before you rely on it in a mix.

Method 5: Work it out from bars and duration

Sometimes you know a song's structure but not its tempo — for instance, from a chart or a session plan. If you know how many bars a section has and how long it lasts, you can calculate the BPM with the same formula as the loop method. You can also run it the other way: if you know the tempo and the arrangement, the song duration calculator tells you exactly how long the song will be, which is handy when a track needs to fit a sync brief or radio edit.

How to check your answer

The half-time and double-time test

The most common error is being out by a factor of two. After you get a figure, ask:

  • Does it fit the style? A reading of 55 for an up-tempo dance record is probably half the real tempo.
  • Where does the snare land? If it hits once per bar on beat three, the song may be in half-time and the programmed tempo could be double what you feel.
  • Would a DJ describe it at this tempo? For mixing purposes, the number that matches similar tracks in your crate is the useful one.

The metronome test

Play a click at your measured tempo alongside the song. If the click and the beat drift apart over 30 seconds, adjust by one BPM and try again. When they stay locked, you have it.

Watch for tempo changes

Recordings made without a click track, especially older soul, highlife, gospel and rock records, can speed up gradually. Measure different sections separately and quote a range or an average. Some songs also switch tempo on purpose between sections; in that case, note each tempo rather than blending them into one misleading figure.

Worked example

Say you want to mix a mid-tempo Afrobeats single into a set.

  1. You tap along and get 51.5 BPM. That feels too slow for a dance record — you were probably tapping every other beat.
  2. You double it to 103 and check with a metronome. The click drifts slightly ahead, so you try 102.
  3. At 102 the click stays locked for a full minute. That is your tempo.
  4. For a final check, you count 51 beats in 30 seconds: 51 × 2 = 102. Confirmed.

Checklist

  • Identify the pulse — kick or snare, not the fastest hi-hat.
  • Tap or count for at least 16 beats or 30 seconds.
  • Round programmed tracks to the nearest whole number.
  • Check for half-time and double-time errors.
  • Verify with a metronome or DAW grid before any production work.
  • Measure sections separately if the tempo drifts or changes.
